While there are other RRDtool front-ends available, I believe that this implementation has several advantages over other front-ends. First of all, it uses a wonderful templating/caching engine called Mason (http://masonhq.com) to powerful definitions of the graphs you want to create. Secondly, the graphing engine which interfaces with RRDtool is written in Perl and designed to be run from mod_perl makes it quite fast with very little system overhead. |

Karpski may also be used to launch programs against addresses on your local network and as a local network intrusion tool. Plus, it's free with source. Its display is an Xwindow display. This was a design decision based on my need to display many windows simultaneously. Console mode would just not cut it. I chose the Gtk display library because it's proven, portable and free. You may not like my choice; the source is included. This program was originally based on my desire to detect someone plugging an unauthorized computer into a LAN. It did this originally by looking at ARP packets. This is where the arp in karpski comes from. |

The current list of platforms is Solaris 2.x, Linux 2.4, and FreeBSD 4.x/5.x. The aim is to extend this to include as many operating systems as possible. The package also includes a couple of useful tools. The first, saidar, provides a curses-based interface to viewing the current state of the system. The second, statgrab, gives a sysctl-style interface to the statistics gathered by libstatgrab. This extends the use of libstatgrab to people writing scripts or anything else that can't easily make C function calls. Included with statgrab is a script to generate an MRTG configuration file to use statgrab. |

| tripwire | 2.3.1.2 | GPL | A system integrity assessment tool. | Tripwire is a very valuable security tool for Linux systems, if it is installed to a clean system. Tripwire should be installed right after the OS installation, and before you have connected your system to a network (i.e., before any possibility exists that someone could alter files on your system). When Tripwire is initially set up, it creates a database that records certain file information. Then when it is run, it compares a designated set of files and directories to the information stored in the database. Added or deleted files are flagged and reported, as are any files that have changed from their previously recorded state in the database. When Tripwire is run against system files on a regular basis, any file changes will be spotted when Tripwire is run. Tripwire will report the changes, which will give system administrators a clue that they need to enact damage control measures immediately if certain files have been altered. Extra-paranoid Tripwire users will set it up to run once a week and e-mail the results to themselves. Then if the e-mails stop coming, you'll know someone has gotten to the Tripwire program... After installing this package, you should run "/etc/tripwire/twinstall.sh" to generate cryptographic keys, and "tripwire --init" to initialize the database. |

“A disgruntled ex-employee who was in charge of making sure we were
Microsoft compliant turned us in to the Business Software Alliance,”
[Ernie] Ball says. [...] “We were raided by armed Federal Marshals
and completely shut down for a day. Then you have to swear you won't
touch any data other than what is minimally necessary to run your
business,” he says. “I don’t believe you should treat a customer
that way.” [...] The company ended up paying a [USD]$90,000
settlement.
Ball [...] decided at that moment his company would become
“Microsoft free.” According to Ball, “Everyone said we couldn’t do
it. It took us about one year” [to convert to] a Linux-based network
and UNIX mainframe.
“I haven’t had to buy XP, and I haven’t had to buy new computers.”
