| abook | 0.5.1 | GPL | Text-based addressbook program for mutt | Abook is a text-based addressbook program designed for use with the mutt mail client. |
| altermime | 0.3.3 | BSD | Allows you to modify mailpacks | alterMIME is a small program which is used to alter your mime-encoded emailpacks as typically received by Inflex, XaMime and AMaViS. alterMIME will allow you to put in things like disclaimers in each email's text body, and also permit you to nullify (make into a zero-byte) attachments. |
| amavisd-new | 0.20030616 | GPL | A Mail Virus Scanner | AMaViS is a perl script that interfaces a Mail Transport Agent (MTA) with one or more virus scanners (not provided). |
| amavis-postfix | 0.3.12 | GPL | A Mail Virus Scanner | AMaViS is a perl script that interfaces a Mail Transport Agent (MTA) with one or more virus scanners (not provided). For completing AMaVIS installation you need to modify the /etc/postfix/main.cf and /etc/postfix/master.cf files as described in the documentation file README.postfix. |
| anomy-sanitizer | 1.63 | GPL | Anomy Sanitizer | The Anomy sanitizer is what most people would call "an email virus scanner". That description is not totally accurate, but it does cover one of the more important jobs that the sanitizer can do for you - it can scan email attachments for viruses. Other things it can do: * Disable potentially dangerous HTML code, such as javascript, within incoming email. * Protect you from email-based break-in attempts which exploit bugs in common email programs (Outlook, Eudora, Pine, ...). * Block or "mangle" attachments based on their file names. This way if you don't need to recieve e.g. visual basic scripts, then you don't have to worry about the security risk they imply (the ILOVEYOU virus was a visual basic program). This lets you protect yourself and your users from whole classes of attacks, without relying on complex, resource intensive and outdated virus scanning solutions. |
| ask | 2.4.1 | GPL | Active Spam Killer | Active Spam Killer (ASK) protects your email account against spam by confirming the sender's email address before actual delivery takes place. The confirmation happens by means of a "confirmation message" that is automatically sent to all "unknown" users. Once the sender replies to that message (a simple reply will do), future emails from that person will be delivered immediately. You can also specify (regexp) addresses to be immediately accepted, rejected (with a nastygram) or ignored. The package also includes a utility to scan your old mailboxes and generate a list of emails to be accepted automatically. |
| balsa | 2.0.16 | GPL | Balsa Mail Client | Balsa is an e-mail reader. This client is part of the GNOME desktop environment. It supports local mailboxes, POP3 and IMAP. *** Build options: *** --with gpgme Build with gpgme/GnuPG support |
| base64 | 1.3 | Public Domain | Encode and decode base64 files | base64 is a command line utility which encodes and decodes files in this format. It can be used within a pipeline as an encoding or decoding filter, and is most commonly used in this manner as part of an automated mail processing system. |
| bogofilter | 0.17.2 | GPL | Fast anti-spam filtering by Bayesian statistical analysis | Bogofilter is a Bayesian spam filter. In its normal mode of operation, it takes an email message or other text on standard input, does a statistical check against lists of "good" and "bad" words, and returns a status code indicating whether or not the message is spam. Bogofilter is designed with fast algorithms (including Berkeley DB system), coded directly in C, and tuned for speed, so it can be used for production by sites that process a lot of mail. |
| comsat | 0.17 | BSD | A mail checker client and comsat mail checking server. | The biff client and comsat server are an antiquated method of asynchronous mail notification. Although they are still supported, most users use their shell's MAIL variable (or csh shell's mail variable) to check for mail, or a dedicated application like xbiff or xmailbox. If the comsat service is not enabled, biff won't work and you'll need to use either the MAIL or mail variable. You may want to install biff if you'd like to be notified when mail arrives. However, you should probably check out the more modern methodologies of mail notification (xbiff or xmailbox) instead. |
| cone | 0.56 | GPL | CONE mail reader | CONE is a simple, text-based E-mail reader and writer. |
| dbx-utils | 1.0.3 | GPL | Extracts emails from MS Outlook Express 5.0 | Extract emails from MS Outlook Express 5.0 directory, and DBX files into mbox format files |
| dspam | 2.8.1 | GPL | A library and Mail Delivery Agent for Bayesian spam filtering | DSPAM (as in De-Spam) is an open-source project to create a new kind of anti-spam mechanism, and is currently effective as both a server-side agent for UNIX email servers and a developer's library for mail clients, other anti-spam tools, and similar projects requiring drop-in spam filtering. The DSPAM agent masquerades as the email server's local delivery agent and filters/learns spams using an advanced Bayesian statistical approach (based on Baye's theorem of combined probabilities) which provides an administratively maintenance-free, easy-learning Anti-Spam service custom tailored to each individual user's behavior. Advanced because on top of standard Bayesian filtering is also incorporated the use of Chained Tokens, de-obfuscation, and other enhancements. DSPAM works great with Sendmail and Exim, and should work well with any other MTA that supports an external local delivery agent (postfix, qmail, etc.) |
| eliminate-dups | 1.2 | GPL | Eliminates duplicate email messages for qmail users | eliminate-dups is a small perl program that will help in the elimination of duplicate messages. |
| elm | 2.5.6 | Distributable | The elm mail user agent | Elm is a popular terminal mode email user agent. Elm includes all standard mailhandling features, including MIME support via metamail. Elm is still used by some people, but is no longer in development. If you've used Elm before and you're devoted to it, you should install the elm package. If you would like to use metamail's MIME support, you'll also need to install the metamail package. |
| esmtp | 0.5.0 | GPL | User configurable relay-only Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) | ESMTP is a user configurable relay-only Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) with a sendmail-compatible syntax. It's based on libESMTP supporting the AUTH (including the CRAM-MD5 and NTLM SASL mechanisms) and the StartTLS SMTP extensions. So these are ESMTP features: * requires no administration privileges * individual user configuration * sendmail command line compatible * supports the AUTH SMTP extension, with the CRAM-MD5 and NTLM SASL mechanisms * support the StartTLS SMTP extension * does not receive mail, expand aliases or manage a queue |
| evolution | 1.4.6 | GPL | Integrated GNOME mail client, calendar and address book. | Evolution is the GNOME mailer, calendar, contact manager and communications tool. The tools which make up Evolution will be tightly integrated with one another and act as a seamless personal information-management tool. |
| exmh | 2.6.2 | GPL | The exmh mail handling system. | Exmh provides an X interface for MH/nmh mail, a feature-rich email handling system. Exmh supports almost all (but not all) of MH's features: viewing the messages in a folder, reading/deleting/refiling messages, and sorting arriving mail into different folders before the messages are read. Exmh highlights which folders have new mail, and indicates which messages have not been read (so you don't lose the sorted, unread mail). If you like MH/nmh mail, you should install exmh, because it makes the MH/nmh mail system much more user friendly. You may also want to use exmh if you prefer a graphical user interface for your mail client. Note that you will also have to install the nmh package. |
| faces | 1.6.1 | Freeware | A list monitor with a visual output | Faces is a program for visually monitoring a list (typically a list of incoming mail messages, a list of jobs in a print queue or a list of system users). Faces operates in five different modes: monitoring for new mail, monitoring an entire mail file, monitoring a specified print queue, monitoring users on a machine and custom monitoring. Faces also includes a utility for including a face image (a compressed, scanned image) with mail messages. The image has to be compressed in a certain way, which can then be uncompressed and displayed on-the-fly in the mail program. This feature of faces is typically used with the exmh mail handling system. Install faces if you'd like to use its list monitoring capability or its face image inclusion capability. If you would like to include face images in email, you'll also need to install the faces-xface package. If you would like to develop xface applications, you'll need to also install faces-devel. |
| faces-xface | 1.6.1 | Freeware | Utilities needed by mailers for handling Faces' X-face images. | Faces-xface includes the utilities that mail user agent programs need to handle X-Face mail headers. When an email program reads the X-face header line in an email message, it calls these utilities to display the face image included in the message. You'll need to install faces-xface if you want your mail program to display Faces' X-face images. |
| FaxMail | 2.3 | GPL | A program to send faxes for free via email and the TPC system | This package contains FaxMail, a utility to assist in preparing and sending faxes via the internet's Email-Fax gateway. It does this via the TPC.INT service. See http://www.tpc.int/ for details. |
| fetchmail | 6.2.5 | GPL | Full-featured POP/IMAP mail retrieval daemon | Fetchmail is a free, full-featured, robust, and well-documented remote mail retrieval and forwarding utility intended to be used over on-demand TCP/IP links (such as SLIP or PPP connections). It retrieves mail from remote mail servers and forwards it to your local (client) machine's delivery system, so it can then be read by normal mail user agents such as Mutt, Elm, Pine, (X)Emacs/Gnus or Mailx. It comes with an interactive GUI configurator suitable for end-users. Fetchmail supports every remote-mail protocol currently in use on the Internet (POP2, POP3, RPOP, APOP, KPOP, all IMAPs, ESMTP ETRN) for retrieval. Then Fetchmail forwards the mail through SMTP, so you can read it through your normal mail client. |
| fetchyahoo | 2.5.3 | GPL | Downloads mail from an Yahoo! webmail account | FetchYahoo is a Perl script that downloads mail from a Yahoo! webmail account to a local mail spool, an mbox file, or to procmail. It is meant to replace fetchmail for people using Yahoo! mail since Yahoo!'s POP and email forwarding services are no longer free. It includes all parts and attachments within the email. It can also forward the email to a specified address. |
| gai-mailcounter | 0.3 | GPL | A Gnome applet displaying the status of the local mailbox | A Gnome applet displaying the status of the local mailbox |
| getmail | 3.2.1 | GPL | POP3 mail retriever with reliable Maildir delivery | getmail is intended as a simple replacement for fetchmail for those people who do not need its various and sundry configuration options, complexities, and bugs. It retrieves mail from one or more POP3 servers for one or more email accounts, and reliably delivers into a Maildir specified on a per-account basis. It can also deliver into mbox files, although this should not be attempted over NFS. getmail is written entirely in python. |
| gnubiff | 1.0.9 | GPL | Mail notification program | gnubiff is a mail notification program that periodically checks for mail and displays headers and/or content when new mail has arrived. It relies on the GNOME and GTK libraries but can be compiled and used with or without GNOME support. Supported protocols are pop3, apop, imap4, mh, qmail, mailfile and SSL. Furthermore, gnubiff is fully configurable with a lot of options like polltime, poptime, sounds, mail reader, mailbox title, etc. |
| gnubiff-applet | 1.0.9 | GPL | GNOME applet of gnubiff, a mail notification program | gnubiff is a mail notification program that periodically checks for mail and displays headers and/or content when new mail has arrived. This package contains the GNOME applet of gnubiff. |
| kshowmail | 3.0.4 | GPL | Show and delete mail on pop3 servers | KShowmail is a KDE utility to show headers or the complete mails on pop3 servers without transfering them to the local mail client. Unpleasant mails can be deleted on the server. The information can be refreshed via timers. |
| mailfilter | 0.6.1 | GPL | A program that filters your incoming e-mail to help remove spam. | Mailfilter is very flexible utility for UNIX (-like) operating systems to get rid of unwanted e-mail messages, before having to go through the trouble of downloading them to the local computer. It offers support for one or many POP3 accounts and is especially useful for dialup connections via modem, ISDN, etc. Install Mailfilter if you'd like to remove spam from your POP3 mail accounts. |
| mailx | 8.1.1 | BSD | The /bin/mail program, which is used to send mail via shell scripts. | The mailx package installs the /bin/mail program, which is used to send quick email messages (i.e., without opening up a full-featured mail user agent). Mail is often used in shell scripts. You should install mailx because of its quick email sending ability, which is especially useful if you're planning on writing any shell scripts. |
| metamail | 2.7 | Distributable | A program for handling multimedia mail using the mailcap file. | Metamail is a system for handling multimedia mail, using the mailcap file. Metamail reads the mailcap file, which tells Metamail what helper program to call in order to handle a particular type of non-text mail. Note that metamail can also add multimedia support to certain non-mail programs. Metamail should be installed if you need to add multimedia support to mail programs and some other programs, using the mailcap file. |
| mini_sendmail | 1.3.5 | BSD | Accept email on behalf of real sendmail | mini_sendmail reads its standard input up to an end-of-file and sends a copy of the message found there to all of the addresses listed. The message is sent by connecting to a local SMTP server. This means mini_sendmail can be used to send email from inside a chroot(2) area. |

Install nail if you need a command line tool with the ability to handle MIME messages. |
| nmh | 1.0.4 | BSD-style | A capable mail handling system with a command line interface. | Nmh is an email system based on the MH email system and is intended to be a (mostly) compatible drop-in replacement for MH. Nmh isn't a single comprehensive program. Instead, it consists of a number of fairly simple single-purpose programs for sending, receiving, saving, retrieving and otherwise manipulating email messages. You can freely intersperse nmh commands with other shell commands or write custom scripts which utilize nmh commands. If you want to use nmh as a true email user agent, you'll want to also install exmh to provide a user interface for it--nmh only has a command line interface. If you'd like to use nmh commands in shell scripts, or if you'd like to use nmh and exmh together as your email user agent, you should install nmh. |
| offlineimap | 4.0.0 | GPL | Powerful IMAP/Maildir synchronization and reader support | OfflineIMAP is a tool to simplify your e-mail reading. With OfflineIMAP, you can read the same mailbox from multiple computers. You get a current copy of your messages on each computer, and changes you make one place will be visible on all other systems. For instance, you can delete a message on your home computer, and it will appear deleted on your work computer as well. OfflineIMAP is also useful if you want to use a mail reader that does not have IMAP support, has poor IMAP support, or does not provide disconnected operation. |
| perl-Razor-Agent | 2.36 | Artistic | Use a Razor catalogue server to filter spam messages | Vipul's Razor is a distributed, collaborative, spam detection and filtering network. Razor establishes a distributed and constantly updating catalogue of spam in propagation. This catalogue is used by clients to filter out known spam. On receiving a spam, a Razor Reporting Agent (run by an end-user or a troll box) calculates and submits a 20-character unique identification of the spam (a SHA Digest) to its closest Razor Catalogue Server. The Catalogue Server echos this signature to other trusted servers after storing it in its database. Prior to manual processing or transport-level reception, Razor Filtering Agents (end-users and MTAs) check their incoming mail against a Catalogue Server and filter out or deny transport in case of a signature match. Catalogued spam, once identified and reported by a Reporting Agent, can be blocked out by the rest of the Filtering Agents on the network. |
| pine2mutt | 0.3 | GPL | Pine2mutt makes mutt behave somewhat pine-like | Pine2mutt is a simple perl-script interesting to people who switch from using pine to mutt. It converts pine's .addressbook into mutt-readable aliases, enables pine-like sent-mail-folder handling and provides pine-like keybindings by sourcing the file "Pine.rc" which comes with mutt. |

| pyzor | 0.4.0 | GPL | Pyzor is a collaborative system to detect and block spam. | Pyzor is a collaborative, networked system to detect and block spam using identifying digests of messages. Pyzor initially started out to be merely a Python implementation of Razor, but due to the protocol and the fact that Razor's server is not Open Source or software libre, I decided to impelement Pyzor with a new protocol and release the entire system as Open Source and software libre. Since the entire system is released under the GPL, people are free to host their own independent servers. Server peering is planned for a future release. |
| qcheck | 1.0 | Freeware | Checks Maildirs for incoming mails. | This is a quick utility to check if there are new mails on any un*x system using Maildirs rather than mboxes. |
| qprint | 1.0 | Public Domain | Encode and decode quoted printable data | qprint is a command line utility which encodes and decodes files in this format. It can be used within a pipeline as an encoding or decoding filter, and is most commonly used in this manner as part of an automated mail processing system. With appropriate options, qprint can encode pure binary files, but it's a poor choice since it may inflate the size of the file by as much as a factor of three. The base64 MIME encoding is a better choice for such data. |
| qsf | 0.9.0 | Artistic | Quick spam filter | Quick Spam Filter is a small, fast spam filter that works by learning to recognise the words that are more likely to appear in spam than non-spam. It is intended to be used in a procmail recipe to mark email as being possible spam. |
| ripmime | 1.3.0.5 | BSD | Extracts attachments out of mailpack format emails. | ripMIME is a small program which has been developed as part of the commercial Xamime development (http://www.xamime.com). ripMIME has been written with one sole purpose in mind, to extract the attached files out of a MIME encoded email package. |

| spamassassin | 2.63 | Artistic | A spam filter for email which can be invoked from mail delivery agents | SpamAssassin provides you with a way to reduce if not completely eliminate Unsolicited Commercial Email (SPAM) from your incoming email. It can be invoked by a MDA such as sendmail or postfix, or can be called from a procmail script, .forward file, etc. It uses a genetic-algorithm evolved scoring system to identify messages which look spammy, then adds headers to the message so they can be filtered by the user's mail reading software. This distribution includes the spamd/spamc components which create a server that considerably speeds processing of mail. SpamAssassin also includes support for reporting spam messages automatically, and/or manually, to collaborative filtering databases such as Vipul's Razor, DCC or pyzor. Install perl-Razor-Agent package to get Vipul's Razor support. Install dcc package to get Distributed Checksum Clearinghouse (DCC) support. Install pyzor package to get Pyzor support. |

| spamoracle | 1.4 | GPL | Spam filter based on statistical analysis of e-mail contents | SpamOracle is a tool to help detect and filter away "spam" (unsolicited commercial e-mail). It proceeds by statistical analysis of the words that appear in the e-mail, comparing the frequencies of words with those found in a user-provided corpus of known spam and known legitimate e-mail. The classification algorithm is based on Bayes' formula, and is described in Paul Graham's paper, "A plan for spam", http://www.paulgraham.com/spam.html. |
| spampd | 2.12 | GPL | Spam Proxy Daemon | spampd is an SMTP/LMTP proxy that marks (or tags) spam using SpamAssassin (http://www.SpamAssassin.org/). The proxy is designed to be transparent to the sending and receiving mail servers and at no point takes responsibility for the message itself. If a failure occurs within spampd (or SpamAssassin) then the mail servers will disconnect and the sending server is still responsible for retrying the message for as long as it is configured to do so. |
| spampl | 0.21 | GPL | Script for sending complaints to mail relay administrators | spam.pl is a perl script for sending complaints to mail relay administrators. It is mainly written by Daniel Stenberg <daniel@haxx.se>, but lots of helpful friends make it develop and improve. You find most of the up-to-date information on the web page over at: http://spam.sourceforge.net. You find better docs and stuff there. Run 'spam.pl -h' to get a help text about what files you wanna edit and what options you'll wanna know about! spam.pl is pure open source, feel free to join in and improve it! Note: copy config file found in doc your $HOME/.spam/config before use |
| spamprobe | 0.9e | QPL | A Bayesian probability spam analysis engine | SpamProbe is a spam detection program that uses a Bayesian analysis of the frequencies of terms used in the email. Because it filters email based on content rather than on general rules, it easily adapts itself to the types of email that each individual user normally receives. |

| tkrat | 2.2 | Distributable | Mailer | TkRat is a graphical Mail User Agent which works in an X11-environent (i.e. unix). I started this project around 1992 when the MIME standard first appeared. Since there was no MUA which had builtin support for MIME (required to transport swedish characters reliably) I had to write one myself. TkRat has evolved a lot since those times and has for example been totally rewritten from scratch twice. |
