bdflush 1.5 Public Domain The process which starts the flushing of dirty buffers back to disk. The bdflush process starts the kernel daemon which flushes dirty buffers back to disk (i.e., writes all unwritten data to disk). This helps to prevent the buffers from growing too stale. Bdflush is a basic system process that must run for your system to operate properly.
bfr 1.5 GPL General-purpose command-line pipe buffer Buffer is a general-purpose command-line pipe buffer. It buffers data from stdin and sends it to stdout, adjusting to best fit the pace stdout can handle. It can solve problems on either end of a pipe. For instance, if the incoming stream is slower than outgoing, performance is mainly dependent on the "start-stream threshold" you set. This can be used to group data into larger packets to, for an example, reduce seeking on a tape drive. In the case of the outgoing being slower, the "stop-stream threshold" prevents unnecessary CPU from being taken up by reading single-bytes and such (if the output stream accepts data one byte at a time, for instance), and will output-only until the buffer goes down to 97% or so. This speeds up certain procedures, such as creating a tar file, gzipping it, and putting it through a program such as "netcat". It boosts performance by allowing a certain level of detachment between the two... allowing tar and (especially) gzip to do its work at the same time the network is doing its work, so you're not sending one packet and THEN seeing gzip kick in to create the next. The Buffer distribution also contains a varient of buffer named Bufplay (bfp). Bufplay's purpose is to do the same sort of buffering as Buffer, but it is intended for use with OSS, configuring /dev/dsp for the type of sound data you specify and playing it. If, for some reason, you want to be cool like me and have 60 megs of RAM inbetween mpg123 and your sound card, you can. =)

As part of its setup phase devfsd creates certain symbolic links which are compiled into the code. These links are required by /usr/src/linux/Documentation/devices.txt. This behaviour may change in future revisions. devfsd will read the special control file .devfsd in a mounted devfs, listening for the creation and removal of device entries (this is termed a change operation). For each change operation, devfsd can take many actions. The daemon will normally run itself in the background and send messages to syslog. The opening of the syslog service is automatically delayed until /dev/log is created. At startup, before switching to daemon mode, devfsd will scan the mounted device tree and will generate synthetic REGISTER events for each leaf node.
dmidecode 2.3 GPL Tool for dumping a computer's DMI table contents Dmidecode is a tool for dumping a computer's DMI (some say SMBIOS) table contents in a human-readable format. This table contains a description of the system's hardware components, as well as other useful pieces of information such as serial numbers and BIOS revision. Part of its code can be found in the Linux kernel, because DMI data may be used to enable or disable specific portions of code depending on the hardware vendor. mkbootdisk 1.4.5 GPL Creates an initial ramdisk image for preloading modules. The mkbootdisk program creates a standalone boot floppy disk for booting the running system. The created boot disk will look for the root filesystem on the device mentioned in /etc/fstab and includes an initial ramdisk image which will load any necessary SCSI modules for the system.
mkinitrd 3.5.18 GPL Creates an initial ramdisk image for preloading modules Mkinitrd creates filesystem images for use as initial ramdisk (initrd) images. These ramdisk images are often used to preload the block device modules (SCSI or RAID) needed to access the root filesystem. In other words, generic kernels can be built without drivers for any SCSI adapters which load the SCSI driver as a module. Since the kernel needs to read those modules, but in this case it isn't able to address the SCSI adapter, an initial ramdisk is used. The initial ramdisk is loaded by the operating system loader (normally LILO) and is available to the kernel as soon as the ramdisk is loaded. The ramdisk image loads the proper SCSI adapter and allows the kernel to mount the root filesystem. The mkinitrd program creates such a ramdisk using information found in the /etc/modules.conf file.
mkinitrd-net 1.10 GPL/LGPL/MPL Network-booting initrd builder mkinitrd-net allows you to build initial ramdisk images (initrds) suitable for use with Etherboot and other network-booting software. reiserfsprogs 3.6.11 GPL The utilities to create Reiserfs volume. Reiserfs is a file system using a plug-in based object oriented variant on classical balanced tree algorithms. The results when compared to the ext2fs conventional block allocation based file system running under the same operating system and employing the same buffering code suggest that these algorithms are overall more efficient, and are becoming more so every passing month. Loosely speaking, every month we find another performance cranny that needs work, and we fix it, and every month we find some way of improving our overall general usage performance. The improvement in small file space and time performance suggests that we may now revisit a common OS design assumption that one should aggregate small objects using layers above the file system layer. Being more effective at small files DOES NOT make us less effective for other files, this is a general purpose FS, and our overall traditional FS usage performance is high enough to establish that. Reiserfs has a commitment to opening up the FS design to contributions, and we are now now adding plug-ins so that you can create your own types of directories and files.

xfsdump 2.2.16 GPL Administrative utilities for the XFS filesystem. The xfsdump package contains xfsdump, xfsrestore and a number of other utilities for administering XFS filesystems. xfsdump examines files in a filesystem, determines which need to be backed up, and copies those files to a specified disk, tape or other storage medium. It uses XFS-specific directives for optimizing the dump of an XFS filesystem, and also knows how to backup XFS extended attributes. Backups created with xfsdump are "endian safe" and can thus be transfered between Linux machines of different architectures and also between IRIX machines. xfsrestore performs the inverse function of xfsdump; it can restore a full backup of a filesystem. Subsequent incremental backups can then be layered on top of the full backup. Single files and directory subtrees may be restored from full or partial backups.
xfsprogs 2.6.3 GPL Utilities for managing the XFS filesystem. A set of commands to use the XFS filesystem, including mkfs.xfs. XFS is a high performance journaling filesystem which originated on the SGI IRIX platform.
