| bzip2 1.0.3 | BSD | Extremely powerful file compression utility |
| Bzip2 compresses files using the Burrows-Wheeler block-sorting text compression algorithm, and Huffman coding. Compression is generally considerably better than that achieved by more conventional LZ77/LZ78-based compressors, and approaches the performance of the PPM family of statistical compressors. The command-line options are deliberately very similar to those of GNU Gzip, but they are not identical. | ||

| Microsoft compress.exe/expand.exe-compatible file (de)compressor. | ||
| unzip 5.52 | BSD-like | Unpacks ZIP files such as those made by pkzip under DOS |
| unzip will list, test, or extract files from a ZIP archive, commonly found on MS-DOS systems. A companion program, zip, creates ZIP archives; both programs are compatible with archives created by PKWARE's PKZIP and PKUNZIP for MS-DOS, but in many cases the program options or default behaviors differ. This version also has encryption support. | ||
| zip 2.31 | BSD-like | A file compression and packaging utility compatible with PKZIP |
| The zip program is a compression and file packaging utility. Zip is analogous to a combination of the UNIX tar and compress commands and is compatible with PKZIP (a compression and file packaging utility for MS-DOS systems). Install the zip package if you need to compress files using the zip program. This version support crypto encryption. | ||
How many other cases exist where [company] has included third party technology in it products, but has also taken the cheaper licensing option and left developers and even users exposed to the threat of lawsuit? Due to the closed nature of the proprietary business model, how can third party developers even check? — NZheretic on LWN
